Another day, another poll - and this one spells bad news for both candidates.
This morning, the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll finds that only 38% of independents - the key voting bloc expected to put the winning candidate over the edge in November - have a favorable view of the President's economic policies. Fifty-four percent have a negative view.
For Mitt Romney, it's even worse. Despite touting his business credentials, the former Massachusetts governor only gets a 35% favorability rating on the economy (47% of independents view his policies as unfavorable).
If the economy is issue number 1, and independents are the key to winning 2012, then these perceptions are the ones that could very well determine the election, in spite of everything else this campaign cycle.

Hey, where's the video podcast of your show Alex?
They are MAINIACS...not Mainards...really?
WOW SE...one more time! This gun legislation is 'silly' because 'most crimes are by unregistered gun owners!' But VOTER FRAUD? You know the one we can't PROVE? Oh if 'ONLY ONE PERSON COMMITS FRAUD' the legislation is WORTH it. Please.
Just what I was coming here to say. Someone should have mentioned voter fraud when S.E. made her arguments about innocent until proven guilty. They worry about hardship on the gun industry - but don't think twice about disenfranchising millions of voters. Galling.
Yes SE it IS paranoia. Nothing has been done on gun control but the NRA and YOU read on some blog that it MIGHT be and you try to use that in your arguments. Tell me AGAIN how THAT'S not paranoia?
So what if Remington leaves the state of New York? Let them go! The state will be safer if there is one less producer of guns in the state! SE Cupp ... once again ... proves her idiocy! She keeps saying "most" gun owners, without being able to see that not everyone is included in "most"! She is an idiot! She (and the NRA) defends allowing clips to hold more bullets! ... why?! What is the use in that? More bullets in the clip of the gun that shot Gabby Giffords is the reason so many were assaulted that day and others were killed! As Alex said, idiots like SE and the NRA, are not for ANY sensible or limiting legislation on gun control! Their very weak defense is that it would be a "slippery slope" to further gun control, when the "slippery slope" has actually been heading in the other direction of looser control for the past many years! SE Cupp ... what a shill ... what a clueless dolt!!!
Sure
let Remington leave the state, whats a few less New York state skilled
manufacturing jobs. I'm sure Ilion, NY will easily absorb those workers within
its booming economy. I'm sure they'll just transition to green jobs. And of
course SE Cupp is an idiot, she doesn't fall in line with the liberal mantra
about less guns equals less crime. But take heart, as I tell all my rabid
anti-gun nut friends, eventually all your foolish and ineffective guns laws get
passed. If we only had the next latest and greatest technolocial gun doo dad
all those bad people will be caught. But hats off to you for a well thought out
post with your attacks on Cupp, "shill", "idiot". Really
where are the stats that show that strict gun laws, microstamping,
fingerprinting, firearms classes jumping through hoops has done anything to
reduce gun violence in this country? Where are the stats? Oh that’s right Alex
Wagner and the rest of the leftist shills at MSNBC say so.
Well Pat - losing a few NY Remington jobs is better than losing more lives in the state at the hands of their product. And even if they leave the state, there is no reason to think those employees can't follow Remington to their next plant, hopefully in Alabama or Texas, where they like guns much more. The proof, Pat, is exactly the example I just used with the Gabby Giffords shooting. If the assault weapons ban had been renewed by Bush/Cheney, the shooter on that day would have had only a 12 bullet clip instead of a 30 bullet clip. That's pretty simple math and something you should be able to comprehend as ... more bullets = more people being injured or killed. Another example are the simple numbers in accidental deaths by gun each year as compared to lives saved by those of you who like to pretend that you're Jack Bauer or John Wayne. Lastly, you don't even see your own hypocrisy in accusing we lefties of having no "stats" (12 does not = 30) while not supplying any yourself. Pretty lame, Pat.
Its 1000 employees that could potentially lose their jobs. And it is a bit smug of you to assume that those employees would gladly move to some to a southern state where you again assumed Remington would move to. Remington makes hunting rifles, their products don't come with "30 bullet clip(s)". So really you continue to just blather the liberal MSNBC line. Yes again there are no stats to back up your claims, just because it seems logical doesn't make it a viable law. Nor will it ever become a law in NY state. Pretty lame whatever your name is.
If the microstamp is on the casing it's a wasted effort. A revolver doesn't eject its casing when the bullet is fired. A semi-automatic ejects its casing, but can easily be picked up and carried away from the scene. In a crime, the bullet could be all forensics has to work with and they already have ballistics tests for that.
This is your excuse for not wanting the law, Mike? This is a silly argument. You might pick up your casings after gun practice ... might (I've seen plenty in the forest when hiking in hunting country in the past) ... but someone committing a crime is not likely to pick up the casings. Casings are left all the time ... why else would law enforcement use it as a key part of gathering evidence or be in favor of this law?
There must be more palatable right wingers around then Cupp to have on the show. Yikes. What a horror story.
As Mego points out. She can't even keep her contradictions straight.
I have decided that when SE is on I will not watch. She is a good example that an IQ test should be given to gun owners. There must be republicans out there that could appear and SE could go back to her paranoia. Maybe Michael Steele.
It is my imprecision after watching this show, that having so called journalist like SE Cupp participate in the evaluation of gun control issues is a clear example of clearly subjective ,vias narrative. In the end ,the contrast of benefit of stamping vs the retoric of assault on gun owners rights is quite evident. The benefits to the general citizenry and its safety far over weights the so called assault .It further sheds light on the values of individuals who defend gun ownership without social responsibly.Last ,I looked ,I thought a good journalist would know better. No wonder she works for a second rate publisher.
Well Carlos, it only stands to reasn that Cupp by "working for a second rate publisher", would naturally fit right in with a second rate television network.
That the second rate, Pat, has decided is important enough to give his second rate opinion on.
Tag you it Defender.
Seriously why why why would such an intelligent and thought-provoking show like NOW have a steady guest like CUPP. She is sickening, rude, at times idiotic, out of touch, brings devil-like points to the conversation. She said it herself - gun legislation is too expensive for the Corporate Owners and who cares if it saves lives and get the bad guy. She, like Satan, protects the bad for the money and could care less about the innocent law-abiding citizens who are the victims of horrendous gun laws and corporate greed. It is sad - she has no compassion or heart or common sense. PLEASE DO NOT INVITE HER BACK............. I CAN NO LONGER WATCH ANY SHOWS WITH HER PARTICIPATING - SHE IS CLUELESS AND BELONGS WITH THE REST OF THE RADICAL RIGHT WINGERS. Us independents and moderate GOP'ers find her without character and NAUSEATING :( I just keep praying for her :(
Many of we liberals of course agree with you about Cupp, misskitty. There are more reasoned Republicans, like Michael Steele or Steve Schmidt, but the reason NOW keeps having the idiot, Cupp, back is because she generates this kind of response from we viewers. I don't think management of MSNBC (as with other networks) is concerned about negative outcry as long as Cupp brings with her a big response. Cupp is clearly a partisan hack and eager to defend the idiocy and greed of the right, but the MSNBC programming directors also need to be called out for their idiocy in giving Cupp this platform.
If the microstamp is on the casing it's a wasted effort. A revolver doesn't eject its casing when the bullet is fired. A semi-automatic ejects its casing, but it's easily picked up and carried away. The bullet itself may be all forensics personnel have to work with, and they have ballistics techniques for that. The casing can easily be carried away from the crime scene.
Mike - in the heat of a murder or robbery, do you really think the gun user will stop to pick up the casings? That's pretty silly, isn't it? I can imagine a drive-by shooting and the gun user telling the driver we need to go back to pick up the casings. Ridiculous. Clearly law enforcement use casings whenever they can to solve crimes. If this microstamp makes their jobs all the more easy ... shouldn't we be doing that? Again, the lack of logic and thinking only in terms of fear from gun owners is pretty amazing.
Why is SE always squalling? Every time and on every show that I see her. I know she's a conservative but she is seen almost daily on liberal media so why wouldn't she try to give the right a better image than living up to the personification of an hysterical, bilious, and redundant malcontent. I've started tuning out every time I see she is on a panel. Even if she has a valid point, she can't make it without appearing infantile. Can't you find a grownup to represent the right on your show?
You ever stop to think that the shrill leftist drivel that comes from the likes of MSNBC alleged "journalists" is just as aborhent to some people as Cupp is to you? No? Didn't think so because you shun Fascism unless it is liberal Fascism. Cookie cutter mind numbing mantra of tax the rich and all will be ideal, more gun laws and all will be ideal, silence the voices of dissent and all will be ideal, ridicule those with dissenting views, and all will be ideal. You people are just as bad as the right wing nut jobs rail against.
More speculation and making stuff up from Pat. Clearly you have no idea how the liberal mind works, Pat, so how 'bout you stop trying?
As I said...."living up to the personification of an hysterical, bilious, and redundant malcontent". Your rant forged a point that I wasn't even trying to make.
I speculate as well as you Defender, speculated about Cupp and her anti-Liberal lemming view on MessNBC.
I know you super smart liberals have everything thought out in your reasoning so I guess it is a dumb question for me to ask, but if the majority of firearms recovered in crimes have their serial numbers removed what would stop a criminal from grinding off the microstamping die? Can I assume that you are counting on criminals being Republicans and therefore too dumb to think of that?
What is the price of a life, Pat? If the microstamping can prevent even a few killers from roaming the street, or if it can solve a crime and ease a family's torment of not knowing who killed their loved one, or if it can keep an innocent person from going to prison ... than isn't this worth it? And how do you know the microstamp is a dye? (not "die" ... though ironic). Who is to say that if you try to grind off the microstamp you then ruin the bullet, making it useless? You're making stuff up. No surprise, though.
Yes what is the price of a life? Is it worth gullible sheep like you fixated on another gun law or two or six, ten maybe? Why don't you closet racists address the true issue of gun violence in America? Why don't you talk about the inequality of the haves v the have-nots? That is the true nature of why Americans murder each other. There will always be Jared Lee Loughners, they will always find a way, fortunately they are rare, but grab the headlines. A Lougher here a Dylan and Klebold there and the 40+ million gun owners in this country pay the price. Crackpots like them are a tiny blip, 80 Americans are murdered every day by gun violence and it is mostly in the poorest parts of the country. Stiff gun law areas like Detroit, Philadelphia, Washington DC have some of the poorest Americans and yes they have some of the highest gun violence. Don't be duped by dunces like Alex Wagner she gets paid to rile idealouges like you. BTW, microstamping is the imprinting an identifying character or characters on the brass cartridge case, the tool used to imprint metal is a "die" and yes it can be ground off the firing pin.
NY microstamping law down in flames once again. Take heart, some inept pol will reintroduce it again next year.
